About Us
OUR MISSION IS TO WELCOME 1 BILLION BLACK GIRLS WORLDWIDE BY 2031
What is it?:
A book club in which we read and critically discuss pre-selected and/ or voted on children’s literature that centers positive representations of Black girlhood, especially from the lens of natural hair culture. Through the book club, students will not only read texts but re-author traditional texts that render Black girlhood invisible.
Inspired by The Black Women’s Club Movement that emerged in the late 19th century, the Sis-STAR circle is a safe space for Black elementary girls to learn how to lift one another up as we climb towards economic, civil, and mental restorative justice.
Members will enjoy the following and more: (a) opportunities to create daily affirmations that empower who they are and hope to become; (b) access to seminars hosted by professionals in the mental health, creative and entrepreneurship world; (c) art therapy tools; (d) and access to therapeutic yoga and dance sessions.
Typically, these environments are created for older Black girls and women but restorative mental health, social uplift beyond systematic oppression and a sense of economic healing as a group is something Black girls deserve at an early age!
Who is it for?:
Black elementary aged girls in Kindergarten to 5th grade
How much does it cost?:
Nothing! It’s FREE!
W.I.F.M.?!
(What’s in it for me?):
FREE Membership includes free books quarterly, access to book club and Sis-STAR circle meetings, supplemental literacy activities, a safe place to explore Black girlhood, mentorship opportunities, and more!
